Just about the most tranquil apartments of Rio de Janeiro

By Mariana Ferraz

It's extremely unlikely you have heard of Ilha da Gigoia, let alone been there. Undoubtedly not a prominent location like Ipanema or Copacabana and it's not a very big island. A brief walk will cover the whole spot and it should be mentioned that there are no streets or cars. Being such a calm and relaxed atmosphere makes for great accommodations. If you're searching for a different vacation escape than staying at hotels, it may also shock you that Gigoia is in the heart of Rio de Janeiro, but yet still, most people have never heard of it, let alone have they looked for apartments there.

Being among the largest of islands in Lagoa da Tijuca, which lies at the northern end of Barra de Tijuca, close to Barra Point Shopping. Nestled away, this particular piece of real estate is a one of the obscured treasures of Rio de Janeiro, though still reasonably near to places like Copacabana and Ipanema. Cars are not a requirement here and there are boats that transport everyone to and from the island. The boats run 24 hours, 7 days a week. It won't take you long to get to know the ferryman and local occupants of the island.

With somewhere in the local community of 2000 people living on the island, it undoubtedly has a impression of community and without a doubt it will be an exciting place to travel to. In addition to flats and apartments, the island features local bars and restaurants. Though you won't find any hotels and it's not an intense night life, it definitely has its charms and rentals are obtainable. In addition to this you can also find numerous services including internet, laundry, a small drug store, as well as a local grocery store on the island, which can be convenient.

One of the tricks though is actually locating apartments, flats or any kind of rentals on Ilha da Gigoia. This is where it becomes necessary to know people. Being one of those "off the beaten path" kind of spots, locating accommodations on this exotic little island haven isn't as easy as surfing the internet or opening a newspaper. In this case, it really becomes critical to get out there and speak to people. If you're searching for a place to live on the island, that little hole in the wall bar situated near the "main street" has now become your portal to the neighborhood. Just ask around, eventually you speak to someone who knows someone who can point you in the right direction.

With some luck, you will soon find yourself in your brand new peaceful island home. Away from the chaotic city life, sounds of traffic and general nuisances. The perfect atmosphere for anyone who is looking for a little peace and quiet and a different way of life. Not your normal holiday in hotels. So sit back, relax and enjoy the charms that this little island life has to offer. Enjoy Rio de Janeiro in a unique light.
