Notable Events In Fredericksburg, Texas

By Pammy McGrath

If you wish to enjoy the experience of living in a small town but still want access to major metropolitan areas, relocating to the Texas Hill Country hamlet of Fredericksburg is an excellent idea. While you are less than 90 minutes from either San Antonio or the state capitol of Austin, Fredericksburg is a respite from the hustle and bustle. And while it might be small, there are still plenty of fun events throughout the year.

Fredericksburg was founded by German immigrants in 1846 and one of the highlight's of any trip to Fredericksburg is a visit to the downtown area that has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The town square, sometimes known by the German word Markplatz, is a center for many local activities, such as the weekly farmer's markets that occur from May until August. The vendors include nearby wineries, lavender farmers, stands from local restaurants, produce stands and much more.

Within the downtown area, there are nearly one dozen art galleries, which team up together to host the First Friday Art Walks. You can enjoy browsing through the galleries, and many of the galleries provide samples of wines grown at nearby wineries. The galleries are all within easy walking distance of each other and many are clustered on Main Street.

Of course, with so much German history, it is not surprising that there is a popular yearly Oktoberfest event in Fredericksburg. As one might expect, this even occurs in early October and includes plenty of live music, arts and crafts vendors, a special children's area and a huge variety of beers. Some are locally produced beers, some are interesting domestic varieties and others are imported brews from Germany. In addition to the food, drink and fun, there is a huge annual chicken dance in the Markplatz that stretches down Main Street.

For families with kids, the town offers some exciting seasonal events. There is a yearly egg hunt and the Pioneer Museum, which is fun for a visit anytime. The town has a yearly fireworks show and parade to commemorate the Fourth of July. Christmas in Fredericksburg also is quite special with a tree lighting ceremony and the lighting of a German Christmas pyramid, which is a beautiful site.
