The Sun City Texas Theater Group Volunteers For Kids

By Ernesto Berturand

The residents of Sun City Texas are habitual volunteers. The amount of volunteerism in the Georgetown community that comes from the labors of Sun City Texas residents is enormous.

One of the most interesting groups of volunteers is the Mad Hatters whose members are part of the Actors and Theater Arts Guild chartered club. This small group of performers read and act out traditional fairy tales for their audiences. The audiences are pre-kindergarten age children in Head Start programs, Georgetown ISD elementary schools, nursery schools and Alzheimer's patients. The performers are seen by approximately 5,000 children each year and many children remember the Mad Hatters from previous years and greet them with joy.

The Mad Hatters get their moniker by way of the character dress that every entertainer wears throughout a presentation. Every single Mad Hatter has on simple black colored clothes and produces their very own special headpiece which illustrates the fairytale and assists each girl or boy to focus their awareness on the story. In cases where the youngsters view the Mad Hatters' story telling from pre-K to the second grade and listen to 1 story each and every semester, they'll have been familiarized with lots of the stories once they depart second grade.

Despite the fact that the Mad Hatters continue to stay seated all through the stories, they help to make the stories come to life by having minimal props along with animated hand motions. They likewise try to redo a part of the vocabulary within the stories to help make the tales much more contemporary and identifiable. Whenever a kid comprehends the genuine fairytale by heart, they take incredible enjoyment from listening to a somewhat unique variation that may sound like their own parents communicating. So as soon as Mama Bear of "goldilocks and the three bears" says to Papa Bear when he complains that his porridge is just too cold, "Oh Papa Bear, I don't understand how to make use of this new micro-wave!" the children scream with laughter.

The Mad Hatters have served the area for longer than ten years. The thespians practically all say that they gain more than they provide and have a passion for the work they do. As part of the Actors & Theater Arts Guild, the participants also take part in the annual variety show of music, dance and comedy routines as well as full-length comedy and drama theater productions at Sun City Texas.
