Adirondack Waterfront Property Includes Many Historic Homes

By Jennifer Bell

There are many beautiful spots located throughout the United States. Each region of the country is different and filled with areas steeped in history and waiting to be discovered by the next generation. The Adirondacks is one such place. Every season has its own unique beauty and appeals to diverse individuals. Ever since the Victorians discovered it, the rich and famous have come here to enjoy the cool summers and the changing autumn foliage. Adirondack waterfront property is still desired by many for its beauty and history.

By the late eighteen hundreds, railroad and steamboat travel made it easier to get to the area. Elaborate hotels with luxurious accommodations were built to entice the wealthiest Americans to come and spend the cool summers. Many of vacationers loved it so much they constructed their own homes on the west shore of Lake George. There were so many mansions built that the area became known as Millionaires' Row.

Instead of building their cottages, as they called them, on tiny sites these new homeowners purchased plenty of acreage to show off their estates to the best advantage. Today there are still properties available for the most discerning buyers. If you have millions of dollars to spend on a building site, you could become the next John D. Rockefeller or William West Durant.

Wikiosco is one of those properties that came on the market not too long ago. It is a huge estate boasting a twelve car garage, a wine cellar that can accommodate four thousand vintage bottles, and a magnificent view of Lake George. With a price tag of almost thirteen million dollars, it is located in a very exclusive neighborhood.

If you are looking for something a little less expensive, but just as exclusive, you might be interested in a camp with Lake Placid frontage. That will probably cost between four and eight million dollars. The type of property you can expect at that price will have around five thousand square feet, seven or eight bedrooms, and at least one boathouse. Multiple fireplaces are pretty standard with these types of homes, and it is possible that a tennis court and pool will come with it.

Some people prefer the additional amenities that come with living in a condominium or town home. It is possible to find these types of properties on the water in the Adirondacks. You should expect to pay in the range of five hundred thousand dollars for a two or three story town home. Many offer chef's kitchens.

Reasonably priced single family homes are available on the water here, but you will not get the square footage or amenities your more affluent neighbors enjoy. If you are happy with two or three bedrooms and a community dock, there is plenty of real estate to choose from.

Upstate New York is a fantastic place to visit and to live, if you have the opportunity. It a section of the country full of history and natural beauty.
