Do Good Fences Make For Better Communities

By David H. Brewster

Unlike communities' centuries ago, our neighbors nowadays are less likely to be family and often connections are difficult to establish. People seem reclusive and are not part of a local ecosystem. Their concerns seem to center around lives of the rich or famous or American Icon rather than anyone or any person in their direct vicinity. Neighborhoods today could be made up of people with different cultural and economic backgrounds. Therefore, you can be surprised how a simple gesture and behavior could lead to a huge misunderstanding following an acute disagreement.

Community consists of individuals with unique kind and personality. Conflicts are unavoidable. Generally, even neighboring countries got their own issues with one another that oftentimes yield to disagreements. That sounds like a catastrophe in the making but if you choose to stay where you are right now, you might impede any and all possible conflicts what so ever. If you want an idea of how far events can snowball just look at the middle east through a website such as Al Jazeera or Micheal Savage via online streaming radio.

In some cases, some people are simply hard to deal with. Either they have exaggerated their own rights and justifications or they are just simply strange. So, staying away is just the best you can do. These types of neighbors are best to be ignored and disregarded. Aside from personal differences, property lines or boundaries seem to pose a never ending issue between neighbors. The main question is, where exactly should it lie?

The fence should lie exactly on the property line of the fence owner. If it doesn't, then it's just another case of a shared fence where each neighbor has delegated responsibility of taking care of their side of the fence. Therefore, issues may arise if one of the property owners maintains one side properly and the other doesn't care at all. With the responsibility fairly delegated, you should keep your side well taken care of and maintained. For the other side, you can try to discuss the matter but if nothing happened, just hope for a better neighbor in the future.

Conflicts could be avoided when we set aside our assumptions and try to talk to involve parties. Think about how communication improves our relationship with our own loved ones, it can surely be applied with our neighbors too. It's worth trying than based our thoughts with our morbid assumptions.
